WILDWOOD – Lafayette senior Brady Micek patiently waited his turn.

During his varsity football career, Micek played wide receiver while serving as the backup to All-State quarterback Jack Behl.

This season, it is his offense to run. And he came out slinging.

Micek threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Lafayette to a 45-0 victory over Parkway North Thursday at Lafayette High.

“The goal all week was to come out here and execute. That’s what we prepared for and that’s what we did,” Micek said.

That execution began on the first drive when Micek lofted a beautiful 42-yard parabola to senior Terance Bills behind the Vikings’ secondary to lift Lafayette to a quick 7-0 lead.

“Brady saw the one-on-one (coverage) and we’ll take that every time,” Bills said.

The Lancers faced a fourth-and-8 on their second drive when Micek threaded a back shoulder strike to senior Tim Washington to put Lafayette inside the one-yard line. Junior Cody Keen powered it in from there to give Lafayette a 14-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game.

Micek used his previous experience as a wide receiver to quickly diagnose coverages as a quarterback.

“It helps a lot. You know how (defensive backs) want to play and where they want to be. It changes things when you can see it from that angle,” said Micek, who caught 46 passes for 596 yards and four touchdowns last season.

While Micek was a step ahead of the Parkway North secondary, Baron James and the Lafayette defense was stepping into the Vikings’ backfield. Sacks on consecutive plays by James and interceptions by Washington and senior Nolan Savoie squashed any gains the Parkway North offense made in the first half.

“Great offseason, lots of film, high energy, I knew we were ready,” said James, who also plays on the Lancers’ offensive line.

Midway through the second quarter, Micek found Zachary Tobin for a 38-yard pickup to put Lafayette back in scoring position. This time, Bills showed another part of his game, powering into the end zone for an eight-yard rushing touchdown to put the Lancers ahead by 21 points.

Tobin led a quartet of pass catchers with 71 yards receiving. Bills added 53 and Washington had 51.

“It’s the goal to click, get all guys involved, spread it around everywhere. It’s hard to stop us when we’re like that,” said Micek, who added seven carries for 39 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Not to be left out, the Lafayette special teams unit joined the party when senior Chrystyan Woodfork blocked a Parkway punt and senior Drew Bender recovered the spinning ball in the end zone to punctuate a near-perfect half for Lafayette and provide a 35-0 locker room lead.

“The kids have put a lot of work into this. Our mindset today was to execute and we did that,” said first year coach Curt Mueller, who earned his first victory as Lancers’ coach.

Lafayette ended a brilliant 2024 season with a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Helias in a Class 5 semifinal last year. The Lancers 12-2 record included impressive wins over Kirkwood in Week 3 and two-time defending state champion Cardinal Ritter in a Class 5 quarterfinal.

That loss (to Helias) just motivates us to come back this season, put our foot on the gas and keep going,” Bills said.

James added, “We’re locked in.”

And nobody looked more locked in than the Lancers’ new quarterback, who showed a dual-threat ability that should give defenses fits throughout the season.

“Brady is a great leader, great competitor, great passer. He does everything for us and we love him,” Mueller said.

Lafayette (1-0) next hosts Hazelwood Central at 7 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 5.

Parkway North (0-1) will visit McCluer North at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6
