Kate Logsdon has unmatched speed. Katy Chapman is a master distributor. Together, the John Burroughs’ senior captains produced a season of highlight-reel goals and spectacular performances, culminating in a Missouri field hockey state championship.
Logsdon and Chapman are the Metro Sports STL field hockey players-of-the-year for 2025.
Playing together since the age of 5, the two developed their own high-level skills, but they also developed an interconnectedness that became a headache for opponents.
“I’ll send a pass and think, ‘Oh, shoot. That’s too fast,’ and Kate’s there. I can count on her to run on to any ball,” said Chapman.
When Chapman has the ball in the midfield, Logsdon knows that the slightest opening is enough for the ball to magically arrive on her stick.
“Katy is such solid presence in the center of the field. She always has her head up, looking for that perfect pass,” Logsdon said.
Logsdon scored 25 goals, Chapman delivered 21 assists, and the University of Virginia-bound senior captains became key cogs in a high-powered attack that averaged 5.72 goals per game.
The Bombers were tested early in the season at the Gateway Classic. Tied 2-2 against St. Stephen’s (TX) in the fourth quarter, Chapman executed her patented air dribble move, carried the ball baseline and then sent a pass to Logsdon, who blasted home the game-winner to propel John Burroughs to the Pool B championship.
“We understand each other as players and how to work together,” Chapman said.

The Bombers won their next seven games by at least five goals, and at the midseason mark, entered the prestigious MAX Field Hockey National High School Invitational at a field in Pennsylvania aptly named, “The Proving Grounds.” Against nationally ranked teams from Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, John Burroughs outscored its opponents 13-0 and left an indelible, St. Louis stamp on the event.
“We usually play the same teams every year, so to have a chance to play these amazing teams from all over the country was a great experience. We got to see different styles of play, and it really helped us build our game,” said Logsdon, who scored 4 goals and added three assists during the three games.
A confident Bombers team returned home with a national, Top-15 ranking but were quickly humbled six days later, when rival MICDS stunned them with a 2-1 win. The loss proved to be just the right dose of medicine.
“That was a hard loss, but it was a reality check. I honestly think it was a good thing for us to know that we have weaknesses and that we had to overcome them. From then on, we kept pushing to get better every day,” Logsdon said.
The Bombers shut out their next eight opponents and cruised into their state semifinal with a record of 22-1 to face nemesis Villa Duchesne, who upset the top-ranked Bombers in the state title game last season.
In double overtime, Chapman delivered a perfect feed to Logsdon, who slipped the game-winning assist across the circle to sophomore Lila Merlin, and sent the Bombers to the state championship game.
“Every person gave it everything they had,” Logsdon said after the semifinal win. “We wanted to play one more game together, and now we can.”

The Bombers experienced heartbreak in the state title game the year before, and during pregame warmups, the butterflies began to flutter.
“There were nerves for sure. We knew St. Joseph’s is a very talented team and that we would have to play our best,” Chapman said.
They did.
John Burroughs ran past St. Joseph’s 5-0 to win its second state championship in three seasons.
“We came out on fire,” Logsdon said. “I’m so proud of how this team played in our last game.”
Logsdon and Chapman will take their unique field hockey talents to the University of Virginia, continuing a bond they have had since they were in kindergarten.
“I know how she plays, she knows how I play, and it goes together well,” Logsdon said.
But before that, they will attempt to match their two field hockey state championships by winning a second state championship in lacrosse this spring.
“We’ve got one more season,” Chapman said, “But for field hockey, this was the perfect way to go out.”
