First Round Roundup: Campbell, Grote score eight goals apiece to lead Kirkwood; Ursuline, Lindbergh post shutouts

Mia Campbell and Claire Grote combined for 16 goals and six assists to lead Kirkwood to a 24-10 victory over Notre Dame Tuesday as the girls lacrosse playoffs got underway with first round action.  

Leading 10-8 at halftime, Kirkwood rattled off 10 consecutive goals in the third quarter to take command of the game. Tiernan Ruby added a hat trick, while Caroline Huey and Meg Parsons combined to make 10 saves.

Kirkwood (6-8) advanced to the second round to face No. 12 Villa Duchesne on Friday.

Francis Howell 23, Oakville 8

Audrey Cornett scored six goals and Addison Poetker added four as Francis Howell found the net early and often to defeat Oakville. The Vikings scored six goals in the first quarter and exploded for nine more in the second to build a comfortable 15-6 halftime lead.

Riese Grier and Lily Combs contributed hat tricks for Francis Howell (5-8). The Vikings travel to No. 11 Northwest Cedar Hill for second round action on Friday.

Shutouts for Ursuline and Lindbergh

Ursuline 12, Whitfield 0

A behind the back goal by Gracie Krejci highlighted a performance in which 10 different players scored as Ursuline cruised to a win over a Whitfield team that played 9-on-9 due to a shortage of players.

Ursuline (7-8), which received two-goal performances from Claire Pruitt and Clare Verslues and a clean sheet from goalie Naomi Briggs, advanced to face No. 16 Parkway South on Friday.

Lindbergh 15, Parkway North 0

Addie Rohrbach and Lexi Salata scored hat tricks as Lindbergh cruised to a first-round victory. The Flyers, which scored eight goals in the first quarter, advanced to face No. 14 Summit on Friday.

First round nailbiters

Clayton 4, Francis Howell Central 3

Addison Dumlao made big saves down the stretch as Clayton held on to defeat Francis Howell Central. The Greyhounds built a 3-0 halftime lead with three different goal scorers before the Spartans made their move in the second half.

Dumlao made six saves to earn her sixth win of the season. Clayton (8-7) will face No. 9 St. Dominic in second round action Friday.

Parkway Central 9, Francis Howell North 7

Parkway Central earned a hard-fought, comeback win over Francis Howell North to advance to the second round. Trailing 3-1 at halftime, the Colts exploded for eight goals in the second half to snap an eight-game losing streak.

The Colts withstood a 21-save performance from Knights’ goalie Morgan Conlon and a hat trick from Mattie Gibbs to earn a playoff victory for the second consecutive year, after not posting one for the previous 19 seasons.

Parkway Central (4-10) will face No. 10 Lafayette on Friday.

Strong day for Webster schools

Nerinx Hall 13, Incarnate Word 2

Gretchen Patterson scored five goals and added four assists to lead the Markers to a first-round victory. Patterson, who leads the area with 91 points (63 goals, 28 assists), accrued at least nine points in a game for the fifth time this season.

Kenley Heinen contributed four goals and three ground balls for the Markers, which scored seven first quarter goals. Nerinx Hall (6-7) advanced to play No. 13 Marquette in the second round Friday.

Webster Groves 16, Pattonville 1

Webster Groves ousted Pattonville from the playoffs for the second consecutive season with a convincing first round victory. Webster Groves (7-7), will face No. 15 Parkway West on Friday.
