As the September temperatures changed from scorching hot to autumn cool, these field hockey players remained on fire. Sponsored by Athletic Republic, this installment of Field Hockey Phenoms celebrates players who made a profound impact for their teams from mid-to-late September.

Forwards:

Hadley Krewet, senior, Kirkwood (feature photo)

A two-year captain, Krewet has become a fearsome offensive threat for the Pioneers. She scored a career-high four goals in a 4-3 victory over Marquette, scored twice in wins over Edwardsville and Eureka and knocked in the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Lindbergh. Krewet has tallied 13 goals for the season and has powered Kirkwood to a 9-3-1 overall record.

Peyton Sorth, junior, Visitation

With Visitation trailing 1-0 to Cor Jesu, Sorth scored the game-tying goal before halftime and the game-winner in the fourth quarter to lead the Vivettes to a 2-1 victory. A relentless forward with a tireless work ethic, Sorth also scored a pair of goals in a victory over Notre Dame and has helped Visitation earn a 4-2 record in the tough GISL conference.

Avery Musselmann, senior, Kirkwood

A dynamic playmaker, Musselmann scored five goals and added eight assists during Kirkwood’s four-game winning streak from Sept. 21-29. With an exceptional combination of speed, skill and grit, she leads the Pioneers will 27 points, including a hat trick against Pattonville and a four-assist performance against Eureka.

Midfielders:

Libby McDonough, junior, Parkway South

A team captain and model of resiliency, McDonough uses a low stick and high effort to achieve success on both offense and defense. She has played a part in two-thirds of the Patriots’ goals this season, including the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Eureka.

Tessa Omurtag, freshman, Ladue

Currently the highest scoring freshman in St. Louis, Omurtag’s 10 assists is the fourth highest total of all local players. Her slick stick work and elite field vision helped her deliver multiple assists against United, Visitation and Webster Groves and produce game-winning goals against Kirkwood and Marquette.

Zoe Miller, senior, Webster Groves

A steady and strong center midfielder, Miller scored a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Parkway South and the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over United. The senior captain and encouraging motivator helped Webster Groves earn a four-game winning streak during that span while leading the team in goals and assists.

Katherine Copaken, junior, Pembroke Hill

Returning from a shoulder injury, Copaken scored goals in her first two games in the lineup. Pembroke Hill earned victories over Nerinx Hall, Parkway South and St. Teresa’s since Sept. 18, and the Raiders have scored 20 goals in six games against St. Louis area teams.

Defense:

Melia Saffold, junior, Ladue

A player that offenses design strategy to avoid, Saffold has emerged as one of the top defenders in the area as well as a force on offensive corners. Of the Rams 11 wins this season, nine are by shutout, and Saffold has contributed five goals and five assists in the process. She obtained her first multiple goal performance of her career on Sept. 18 with a two-goal effort against Visitation.

Olivia Diehr, junior, St. Joseph’s

The center defender for the Angels, Diehr is vocal, organized, and confident. Her assertive steps to the ball have stopped numerous offensive rushes before they developed. Diehr has played a major role during a string of seven consecutive shutouts for St. Joe’s while adding three goals and five assists.

Emerson Hendren, junior Pembroke Hill

A strong defender with impressive tackling skills, Hendren is a difference maker for a Pembroke Hill defense that continues to improve. She is also finding her scoring touch, knocking in her first goal of the season last week.

Goalies:

Emerson Porter, junior, Westminster

A shot-stopping machine, Porter ranks second in the area with 131 saves and has recorded seven shutouts. She delivered a phenomenal 24-save performance against Lafayette, holding the Lancers scoreless until the final minute of overtime. She followed it up with a 26-save effort against Summit six days later.

Lyric Allen, senior, United/University City

A resilient and fierce leader with a strong presence in goal, Allen leads the United defense with steady communication, confidence, and poise under pressure. She saved 13 shots against Ladue and 11 in games against Marquette and Westminster.

Allison Trueman, freshman, Webster Groves

A newcomer at the goalie position, Trueman accepted the challenge with grace, courage and skill while improving every game. She made 23 saves against Ladue, 16 against Summit and has held seven teams to one or fewer goals, including a string of three consecutive shutouts.

Lauren Jane Masson, junior, Visitation

A ferocious competitor, Masson observed Halloween early by emulating a brick wall. She stopped 39 of 42 shots against St. Joseph’s and 22 out of 24 against Summit. She leads the St. Louis area with 138 saves and ranks third in save percentage (.868).
